How to Find an Architect
Architects can take complex design tasks and make them a whole easier to deal with. Whether you want to build your own home, you want to remodel your business or you have a different project in mind, you’re going to want an architect to help you get the look and function that you are interested in. Finding the right architect isn’t as easy as it seems though, and you should be prepared to put in some serious time tracking down the right individual.
Gather Project Information
Before you even bother taking the time to try and track down some architects, make sure that you know as much as possible about what you want from your project.
Whether you are building a house for you and your family, you’re planning a new business location or you’re creating the next biggest skyscraper in your city, make sure you know what you want and that you can explain exactly what you’re interested in getting to any architect that you meet. If you aren’t sure about most of the details, you probably haven’t planned and researched enough just yet, so sit down and do some more thinking.
The very first thing that you should do when searching for local architects that can offer the perfect design for you is talk with friends, family and colleagues that you know. You can learn a lot about what good architects look like and what they do at the American Architectural Foundation, but you’ll have to search more locally to find usable professionals in your area. Chances are good that at least a few of them relied on an architect in the past, and they may have a few options that they want to recommend to you. Make a list of all the good candidates that you get from this approach so you can research the architects a bit more later on. The American Institute of Architects can also serve as a resource to find more professionals.
Search through local community databases for architects in your area for a good idea of who you have to choose from. Don’t just stop when you find some architects that seem like a good pick though, take the time to research them a bit further while you’re online. Use resources like Yelp, Angie’s List and others to help you locate top quality architects with high quality reviews. Make sure that you read through the reviews of each architect so you know what you can expect from the different professionals.
Give Them a Call
Call up a few different architectural firms to find out if they are taking on new work, what sort of work they do, whether or not they are interested in helping you and if they are interested in meeting in person. Only work with architects that have at least a bit of availability, and choose professionals that have experience designing buildings that fit your project. Not every firm is going to be a good fit and that’s okay. Just make sure that you keep calling around until you find a few that seem like they are a good option for you.
This will be more informal than a job interview, but you’ll want to take the time to meet with a few of the standout architects that you’re considering. This gives you a chance to show off your project and see if they are interested, and also to learn some more about the architect that you’re considering. Make sure that you ask lots of questions and really try to find out what sort of experience the professional has before you consider hiring them. You should feel comfortable relying on them after talking one on one, and if you don’t I suggest moving on.
After going through all these different steps, you should have a pretty good idea of which architect you want to use. Make a list of the top candidates and try to work out a time to get started with your chosen architect, the fun is just beginning.
